Today was the day for parcels to arrive, apparently. My MS Vista Business upgrade DVD finally showed up. Sagawa tried to deliver it last night, but I was at work. Had 'em reschedule for early this morning in case I took off for Otaru to take pictures. Mayumi came over, so I didn't end up going to Otaru. But at least Vista came. Now I need to backup my drive and ponder whether I really want to make this jump or not.
Then this evening, a Post Office guy delivered a Nikon 50mm f1.8 AF lens that I'd picked up off eBay recently. Happy days are here again! Got an f-EE error when I first put the lens on, but a quick Google search led me to the answer in a Flickr D70 users thread- twist the aperture ring. That fixed it and I was off and shooting. Preliminary pics tell me that it is, indeed, a decent low-light lens. Just going from my gut, it seems a lot better than the 18-135mm kit lens for low-light. Might be headin' to Sapporo tomorrow, so maybe I'll put a little mileage on it then. Maybe I'll just leave the 18-135mm at home... Hmmm.

Hi Fried Toast
Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment recently. Nice to know that there's 'somebody' out there reading this stuff!
I suppose if we use your analogy of Canon White and Nikon Black, then I have 'seen the light' and moved back to Canon :-)
The whole Canon v Nikon thing is a bit circular - 'but' I agree completely about the Canon Rebel's - I HATE them, and they certainly didn't inspire me to stick with Canon when the competition (at that stage) consisted of the awesome Nikon D70.
I did use the D80 for a while, but decided to stick with my D70s. When time for change did come, however, I decided to give Canon another serious look - and the 30D blew me away - certainly for the price and features. I had always missed Canon's rotating dial on the back of their mid-range to top end cameras, and the 17-55mm f2.8 with 'IS' is a honey of a lens.
It's early days, but I will definitely keep the thread on my blog going - for what it's worth.
Thanks for visiting, and commenting. I appreciate it.
BTW - Yes, the 50mm f1.8 Nikon is a fantastic lens - much better than the 18-55mm kit lens (although also good for what it does). I used my 50mm f1.8 all the timer as a portrait lens - really loved its low light capability and out-of-focus backgrounds at f2.8. Beautiful. In that respect, I don't think the Canon 50mm f1.8 is a patch on the Nikon. The Canon 50mm f1.4 however, now that's another story...
